The Lassen Regional Solid Waste Management Authority wishes to announce the agency is now accepting applications to serve on the Board of Directors commencing January 2016. The director-at-large position is held by a public member of the five-person board of directors. Currently, the other four positions are held by two city of Susanville City Councilors (Board Chairman Lino Calligari and Director Kathie Garnier) and two Lassen County Supervisors (Vice Chairman Jim Chapman and Director Tom Hammond) The Solid Waste Authority operates Bass Hill and Westwood landfills and the nine transfer stations in Lassen County. The Authority also administers the agreement with franchise refuse collector C&S Waste Solutions. The agency sponsors various events and programs in Susanville and Lassen County including the tire amnesty and household hazardous waste collection events, as well as waste oil and electronic waste collection programs.

The only county in northeast California with a full-time operating landfill, the Waste Management Authority is dedicated to providing clean, safe and environmentally sound waste management facilities to Lassen County residents at a fair and reasonable cost. The Authority operates under challenging environmental regulations enforced by state of California agencies, including Cal Recycle and the Regional Water Quality Control Board. Solid Waste Authority staff seek to comply with state mandates while keeping Lassen County residents and businesses in the solid waste management system through low-cost disposal and recycling fees. The ideal candidate for the director-at-large position will have an interest in solid waste management, including recycling programs. Directors review and take action on proposed Solid Waste Authority budgets, expenditures, policies and procedures. New solid waste programs and improvements to existing programs are routinely discussed and agendized for possible board of directors action. Board of directors meetings are held at 3 p.m. the fourth Tuesday of the month at the Lassen County Board of Supervisors chambers.

Applications will be accepted through 4 p.m. Nov. 19. The director-at-large cannot be employed by either the city of Susanville or the county of Lassen nor can the director-at-large have any direct or indirect financial interest in any solid waste collection or processing business in Lassen County. The board of directors will meet at 3 p.m. Nov. 24 to review candidates' applications and possibly take action on selecting a director-at-large.
