VERNON— More than 75 members and guests of the Lamar County Farmers Federation gathered in Vernon on August 17 for the organization's annual business meeting.

Jeff Helms, Director of Communications and Public Relations for the Alabama Farmers Federation and ALFA Insurance, served as the keynote speaker.

During his presentation, Helms emphasized the importance of farmers telling the story of agriculture to the public at large and how his department within the Farmers Federation helps tell those stories.

He also gave the members a sneak-preview of several commercials that will air as part of ALFA's new ad campaign. One of these commercials featured local agent Alisha Clark and her family.

Following Helms's presentation, LCFF President Will Gilmer called the business session into order. Of note, he, Richard Jaggers, Terry Gosa, and Sonny McLellan were re-elected to serve new three-year terms on the organization's Board of Directors. Twenty-nine-year-old rowcropper John Cunningham was elected to begin serving his first term on the Board. Cunningham will also serve as chairman on the county's Young Farmers Program.

In addition to the election of Board members, seven bylaw amendments were ratified and a resolution honoring retiring Board member Agee McReynolds was passed.

"All in all I would say we had a very productive meeting," said Gilmer. "This was one of our best crowds in several years, and our members seemed to enjoy the meal and the time spent in fellowship with one another. They were engaged throughout the meeting and left with a positive outlook about the direction of our organization."
