Students at Mount Vernon High School will present Katherine DiSavino's "Things My Mother Taught Me" this Saturday, Nov. 6, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 8, at 2 p.m., in the district auditorium.

Directed by Tom Stephens, the play tells the story of Olivia and Gabe, two young adults who have just packed up all of their belongings and driven halfway across the country to start a new life together in Chicago. Their moving day doesn't go exactly as planned, though, and things become slightly more complicated when all of their parents show up to help.

There are two acts, and the total run time is about 90 minutes.

Described variously by the students as "funny and modern" and "cute and honest," the cast members agreed that the appeal of the play lies in its exploration of trust issues normal families face, making it relatable for all families.

In other words, "parents can drive you crazy, but they love you unconditionally," said Stephens.

Although as a contemporary play, the show may lack name recognition, Stephens said he hopes people give it a chance and turn out to see it.

"It is accessible to all audiences, and if s something that people will really enjoy if they come to see it," he said.

Early in the rehearsal process, the students had the rare opportunity to Skype with the playwright, Katherine Disunion.

Stephens said that DiS-avino gave the students a lot of insight into her real-life inspirations for characters in the play. Most importantly, however, "she empowered us to make it our own. She was very open with us, encore-aging us to have fun and share our own unique take on the play," he said.

Tickets for the Nov. 6 and 7 performances are available in the high school office and will also be available at the door. Prices are $5 for students and $10 for adults.
