The Oakes Public Schools, in conjunction with the American Legion and VFW, will be recognizing military Veterans during our third annual Veterans' program on Tuesday, November 10 beginning at 10:00 a.m. in the south gymnasium. We are proud to partner with the Legion and VFW in making one Oakes program for all to enjoy. This program will include singing by our elementary and high school students, along with music played by our high school band. Several other students, staff, and veterans will be speaking in honor of all veterans.

We are proud to announce the speaker for the Veterans' Day Program will be W01 Steve Hoikkala. W01 Steve Hoikkala currently serves as the 141 Movement Enhancement Brigade (MEB) Mobility Warrant Officer at his current unit of assignment in Fargo, N.D. His full-time job is also with the North Dakota Army National Guard (NDARNG) working as an Officer Recruiter in the Recruiting and Retention Battalion. Mr. Hoikkala has 14 years in the NDARNG, getting his start at age 17 in the then known as Company A 142nd ENG (HVY) located in Oakes, N.D. He then served overseas with the 142nd in Iraq for 14 months during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003-2004. Steve performed duties as the State Master Trainer and Eastern Area Coordinator and helped build the ND Military Funeral Honors Program from 2007-2014. Steve is an active member of veteran organizations in Fargo to include the VFW, American Legion, and 40/8. He served as the District 10 Commander from 2013-2014. A proud graduate of Oakes High School in 2002, Mr. Hoikkala still has family and friends that always keep him coming home from his residence in Fargo, N.D. Supporting him with his career is his wife, Jenna. He is the son of Dale Hoikkala (Oakes), and Chandra Elsen (Hecla, S.D.). His grandmother (Muriel West), uncle, aunt (Lowell and Karen Tripp), and numerous extended family also reside in Oakes.

We invite all parents, community members, and especially veterans to join us for this exciting day at Oakes Public Schools. A lunch of hamburgers and chips will be served following the program and everyone is invited to join us for this meal. Please come help recognize all Military Veterans!!
