Members met at the Methodist church in Knox City on October 23 to hear a report on the October 9 conference in Wichita Falls. Terry Allen, District 9 Legislative Chairman, interviewed Senator Robert Duncan via TV, Senator Craig Estes sent two aides, Diane Helms and Jennifer Smith. Candidates for the state House of Representatives, Drew Springer of Muenster, Texas and James Frank of Wichita Falls spoke.

Terry asked each about their view regarding keeping our communities as they are (denied benefits) or changing to defined contributions. We are in a battle with some people and some institutions who want to get their hands filed with our retirement money! Our state legislators need to be educated on the issue.

Lunch was catered by Texas Best Meals, then a memorial for members deceased since the last meeting a year ago was held. Fran Plemmons, TRTA 1st Vice President spoke on "Knowing Your Opposition" and gave us a list of our worst enemies regarding our annuity. We have 1501 members in District 9. One of every twenty people in Texas draws a monthly annuity.

A Retirement Seminar will be held at Region 9 in Wichita Falls November 10, 2012. There is space for 250 and 125 have already registered. This seminar will offer information helpful to a retiring school person.

Joanna Delgado was elected as District 2nd vice President for the next two years.

Jerry Coplen, Knox County Extension Agent, spoke to our local unit re "Drought, Plants and Water." He suggested taking shorter showers, stopping any leaks, replacing old water hog commodes, replacing shower heads, installing water saving faucets, capturing rainwater for plants.

Our next meeting will be November 27 at the Knox City Methodist Church Fellowship Hall at 2:30 PM. All are welcome to attend.
