SANTIAM PASS: A multiple vehicle crash, near milepost 78 on Highway 20, sent a number of people to hospitals on Sunday.

According to Oregon State Police reports, the incident occurred on November 1st, at about 2:30 p.m., OSP troopers and emergency personnel responded to the report of the wreck, two miles west of the Hoodoo Ski Resort.

Police said a 2006 Scion, operated by Kara J. Smith, 31, of Redmond, was traveling eastbound when she lost control on a sweeping right curve. The Scion crossed the center line and went into the path of a westbound 2009 Ford Flex wagon, operated by Gail W. Hayes, 73, of Salem. The Ford struck the Scion and both came to rest in the westbound lanes.

An off-duty trooper assigned to the Salem Area Command stopped at the crash scene and rendered medical aid. Two children from the Scion were taken by ground ambulance to Black Butte Ranch and then by air ambulance to St. Charles Hospital in Bend for treatment of serious injuries. At least two adults were taken by ground ambulance to St. Charles for serious injuries.

The OSP report said conditions at the time were light rain and the roadway was wet. The highway was originally closed in both directions for a short period of time but one lane was opened shortly after. The investigation is continuing and more information will be released when it is available.
