Agnes "Sally" McKenzie

Funeral services were held Thursday October 29, 2015 at Emmanuel Presbyterian Church for Agnes "Sally" McKenzie, 98 who passed away in Watertown, SD October 26. Pastor David Lick officiated the service. Organist was Carol Nelson. Pallbearers were Brent Norberg, Brian Norberg, Chad McKenzie, Eric Knight, Tom Harrell and Paul Sheldon. Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery. Walter Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Agnes "Sally" McKenzie of Marion, SD passed away October 26, 2015 at Jenkins Living Center in Watertown, SD at the age of 98.

Agnes Kerkoff was born in Alexandria, SD on June 3, 1917 to Frank and Nina (Parker) Kerkoff. At an early age her parents moved to a farm north of Miller, SD where she grew up.

Sally attended rural school in Hand County and graduated from St. Lawrence High School. She attended Wessington Springs Junior College obtaining a teaching degree. She me her future husband there and married Dale McKenzie of Reliance, SD on Dec. 31, 1941.

Sally taught rural school in Hand County for four years and Lyman County for two years. In 1949 Sally and Dale moved to Marion, SD. She spent many years at home raising her children. She then went back to teaching in 1961 at Riverdale Country School in Turner County for five years.

In 1961 she continued her education at Freeman Junior College earning her Associate Degree and then obtained her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Dakota Wesleyan University in 1972. Sally then taught First Grade at Marion Public School for 18 years.

Sally belonged to the Emmanuel Presbyterian Church, American Legion Auxiliary, Eldeen Club, and was a dedicated worker with the Presbyterian Women at the Wieman Consignment Auctions.

Sally loved her teaching career and reading was her favorite subject to teach, especially after she found a new Scott Foresman reading series, something other than "Dick and Jane." She liked to tell about taking her first grade classes to the Shrine Circus and having a rope with knots tied in intervals and everyone would have to hang on to a knot so they wouldn't get lost. Sally was known for her cookie baking at the Legion Auxiliary Christmas Fairs. She would frost and decorate over 200 cookies with painstaking care. She was known for her Sour Cream Raisin Pies at the Wieman Consignment Auctions making five pies for every sale. Her family will always remember all the cookies and treats she made every Christmas.

Sally is survived by her children, Jerry (Carol) McKenzie of Lakewood, CO, Carolyn (Ken) Norberg of Watertown, Mike (Janet) McKenzie of Pierre, Pam (Ron) Hunnicut of Giltner, NE. Grandchildren Brent Norberg, Brian Norberg, Terri Knight, Chad McKenzie, Carrie Norwood, Katie Harrell, Jill McKenzie, Miranda McKenzie, Amy Levine, Elizabeth Hunnicut, Josh Hunnicut, and 14 greatgrandchildren. Preceding her in death is her husband Dale McKenzie, brothers Russel, Lawrence, and Frank Kerkoff, sisters Armista Wheelhouse, Lois Roesler Warren, and Geraldine Green.

Memorials may be directed towards Emmanuel Presbyterian Church or the American Legion Auxiliary.
