Dennis Alan Schurle

Dennis Alan Schurle, 64, of Alma, Kansas, died Tuesday, October 27, 2015, at his home following an illness. He was a life-long resident of the community.

Dennis was born December 14, 1950, in Manhattan, Kansas, the son of Wayne E. and Irene Whitaker Schurle. He attended local schools and graduated in 1968 from Alma High School. He later graduated from Manhattan Technical College. Dennis served in the United States Army in Viet Nam.

Dennis worked for the Rock Island/Southern Pacific Railroad. He had several positions but at his retirement he was a foreman for the Bridge and Building Department. After retiring from the railroad, Dennis owned and operated Schurle's Skid Loader and Stump Removal Service. His business involved many other aspects including landscaping, tree trimming and carpentry.

He was a gun enthusiast and loved gun shows and the buying and selling of guns. He was very well known for his fine award-winning homemade wine. He was a life member of the NRA and helped organize many NRA banquets. He was also a 15 year Hunter Safety Instructor. He enjoyed Kansas State sports and the Packers and in his earlier years played a lot of softball. Dennis loved to hunt and fish including a large bull moose in Alaska. He enjoyed the times spent with family, especially his grandchildren.

Dennis married Sarah Mathies on September 29, 1973, in McFarland. She survives at their home.

He is also survived by his sons, Jason Schurle (Tara), Alma and Chris Schurle (Lindsay), Anthony; his grandchildren, Cameron, Maddie, Kaslynn, Kolten and Josh. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Marilyn Baumann, Darrell Schurle and Richard Dean Schurle.

A memorial service with military honors was held Saturday, October 31, 2015, at St. John Lutheran Church in Alma. Reverend Robert Grimm officiated. The family suggests memorial contributions to St. John Lutheran School or St. John Lutheran Church, and those may be sent in care of the funeral home.
