Eleanor Charlotte Kern passed away peacefully on October 27, 2015. Eleanor was born on April 17, 1929, to Charles and Brigitta Pavelka. She was very close to her mother and they had many adventures together. Eleanor gave birth to her only child, Kathy, in 1953. Her husband at the time was Jerry Kern. Eleanor worked for Sears in Chicago for 25 years working her way up to a buyer position. After retiring, she volunteered and worked at the Brookfield Zoo. Her love for her daughter and grandchildren was evident and she spent time with them going on cross country road trips, cruises, attending events and visiting various zoos. Eleanor was an animal lover and enjoyed watching soap operas. She loved the song "You are my Sunshine" and referred to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren as her "sunshines." Together, they would sing the song with smiles and laughter. Eleanor moved from Willow Springs, Illinois, to Bruno in 1999, where she lived with her daughter for 11 years before moving to the Sandstone Nursing Home.

Eleanor was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Brigitta Pavelka. She is survived by her daughter, Kathleen (Gerry) Smith; grandchildren, Josh (Jenelle) Smith and Concetta Smith; and great-grandchildren, Ezri, Kira and Zoey Smith.

The family extends special thanks to the Essentia Health Nursing Home staff and emergency room staff.

Eleanor will be greatly missed, but she is in a better place. Her family will be having a private celebration of life to share all of the wonderful memories that Eleanor helped create. Askov American November 5, 2015
