A new commissioner for Powell County has been selected. Doug Crachy of Elliston has been chosen to be the commissioner for District 3, which encompasses the middle of the county and includes the north portion of Deer Lodge, Gold Creek, Garrison, Phosphate, Avon and Elliston. At their meeting on Oct. 28, Commissioners Rem Mannix and Dan Sager said that after interviewing three candidates for the position, who had been forwarded to them by the Republican Central Committee, and ranking each candidate on a number of factors, they decided to choose Crachy.

The public that showed up at the meeting voiced support for their decision.

"(He) has always been very level headed and thoughtful in the direction he's going," said attendee Kirk Sandquist, "I think that was a great decision."

"All three of them had something to offer to the county.

According to the commissioners, Crachy is retired, but had worked with the Small Business Association and has served as chairman of the Powell Rural Disposal District.

The other two candidates for the position were Frank Ahl of Elliston and Bruce Anderson of Deer Lodge.

The commissioners said that after interviewing the candidates, they ranked each of them on a number of aspects on a scale of one to five.

Some of those aspects included presentation of themselves, how they would present themselves to the public, their background in the county, their education, why they wanted to be a commissioner, their supervisory skills, their people skills, the time they have to devote to the job and their knowledge of how county government works.

Mannix said that Crachy will have to attend the Montana Association of Counties training in December for certification and that soon he will be sworn in as commissioner. Although the Commissioners will have next met on Nov. 2, they stated that due to a surgery Crachy had scheduled, the swearing in will take place in a week or so.

"We can run with two of us for a short time," said Sager. Crachy will be appointed to fill the seat of Donna Young who decided to retire this year. He will be required to run for election in 2016 to fill out Young's remaining term which extends until 2018.
