BENSON — For more than 30 years Benson area youngsters — and adults — have delighted in Halloween festivities thanks to the efforts of members of the Greater Federation of Women's Club Benson Junior Womans Club.

And judging by attendance, comments and smiles at Benson Fire Station Saturday, the annual Halloween Carnival was a grand success.

That much was confirmed by Shelley Figueroa, the event organizer who drew praise from the various game hosts on hand. They all also commented on the turnout, describing the carnival and attendance as "fabulous" and "wonderful."

Of course the kids were the main attraction with the fire station venue providing an alternative or an addition to traditional trick or treating.

"Everything is just great," said Figueroa, while acknowledging fellow club members and everyone else who help make the event a reality, and was pleased by the turnout.

With the Seventh Street blocked to traffic at Gila and San Pedro streets, boys, girls, teens, adults, many in costume,, milled about as tradition carnival games kept youngsters engaged and jubilant.

"I've played most of the games and they're all fun," proclaimed Amelia Powell, 6. "I got candy I'm going to share with my sister." Julie Ann Tifft, 4, in agreement, said she too would make the rounds from game to game winning prizes and treats. She said she'd been eyeing the cupcakes at one of the games.

All games were 50 cents each or three for $1, and every child was winner, every time.

Evidenced by longevity, the annual carnival is one of the San Pedro Valley's favorite traditions. "I remember going to it when I was a child," Figueroa said prior to Saturday's carnival.

The Junior Women are always seeking new members, Figueroa said, noting the Halloween Carnival is one of many community endeavors the club is involved with.
