Friends, family and colleagues gathered last Wednesday to honor the distinguished career of Shannon Markle upon his retirement as administrator of the Central Regional Jail. The event was held at Shock-N-All Bowling Alley and Conference Center.

It was a full house at the retire reception including Steven Canterbury, Administrative Director of the Supreme Court who spoke about working with Shannon and how much he had contributed to his community and the Regional Jail system.

Several associates also spoke of their pleasant experiences in working with Markle and how he would be missed. He was also presented several gifts by his co-workers.

The honoree told the audience that it had been a pleasure working with all of them and that while he was looking forward to retirement, he would certainly miss them.

Markle began his career with the West Virginia Regional Jail Authority in March 1989 at the Eastern Regional Jail after spending the previous six as a correctional officer in Webster County. He transferred to the Central Regional Jail in 1992 where he continued to work his way up the ladder until he became facility administrator in February 1999. He concluded his illustrious 26+ year career on October 31, 2015.

When asked to reflect on his professional life, Markle stated that his leaving was bittersweet. "I look forward to being able to spend more time with my wife and little boy. However, God has truly blessed me to be able to work in this field and hopefully I have made a positive difference in some peoples lives." He went on to elaborate on what he termed a "great bunch of friends and coworkers. I will truly miss the day to day contact with the great people that make up the Central Regional Jail and the Regional Jail Authority. This was not just a job to me and I am grateful knowing that I leave the facility in the hands of a great bunch of people who will continue to position it on a path of service and dedication to the community and the people we serve."
