A great evening...

Jeanine and I were fortunate enough to be invited to Shannon Markle's retirement dinner last Wednesday and it was a very pleasant experience. We joined a large number of local and state folks in recognizing the many accomplishments Shannon has made as Administrator of the Central Regional Jail.

Shannon certainly deserves all the accolades he received Wednesday night. His replacement will soon be named by the Regional Jail Authority and they will undoubtedly have big shoes to fill.

I told him Wednesday and will repeat it publicly here that he did a great job at the CRJ and I certainly wish him well as he embarks on this next phase of his life.

Gas prices...

I have received several comments about my recent column pertaining to gasoline prices. All those who have contacted me have agreed that there is norhymenor reason the price structure. I still believe it is based on what the market will bear and unfortunately we allow it to happen.

I received an Interesting article in my email last week. It discussed how some of the big oil companies were laying off some of their workforce due to declining profit. Here is a small portion of that article... Exxon also got clobbered reporting Friday that profits fell 47% from a year ago. Earlier in the week, ConocoPhillips swung to a loss of $466 million, compared to a profit $1,6 billion last year. Now I find that ironic. These companies didn't apologize for making a profit of $466 billion last year or the previous decade that they have raped the public in the name of corporate greed. While I hate to see anyone lose their job, these companies can't expect me to feel sorry for them. Their profits were unreasonably large so now that they have to live in the real world like most businesses It is only reasonable to expect that they will have to tighten their belts. It will be interesting to see if their corporate executives suffer financially?

Losing a great service...

Many probably have noticed that Sally Stewart is closing the PURR WV branch that she founded some years ago. That agency, Sally and a hand full of other volunteers, have done a marvelously job of controlling stray cats in our communities and dealing with the explosion of unwanted felines.

I haven't discussed this with Sally, but I imagine she is calling it quits due to the lack of assistance. In the past she has tried to encourage others to join and/or take over the operation. I can easily see how this project has consumed her life and changes were Inevitable. Sally does everything she deals with, first rate. She devotes all the time necessary to make it work and that is certainly what she did with this organization. I think this community owes her a debt of gratitude for her remarkable effort.
