A ribbon cutting was held Saturday, January 31, in Ewing at Station One of the Ewing/Maywood R-4 Fire Department. (Station two is in May wood).

The ribbon cutting held inside was at the entrance to the hallway which leads to the four new truck bays.

Simon Thrower, Chief of the Department, asked Bro. Tim Smith to open in prayer.

Terry Faulconer secretary/treasurer welcomed those attending. He introduced, Smith, Thrower, Cliff Ramsdale - of Bleigh Construction, Randy Routt, Les Edmonston - President of the Depart, Ronnie Pierce, State Representative Brian Munzlinger and Lewis County Sheriff, David Parrish. These men were involved with the ribbon cutting.

Faulconer said, "We also recently had two members retire, Darrel Eisenberg and David Griesbaum, who have worked hard to accomplish this project as well.

"Not only is today a Grand Opening of this wonderful facility but it also commemorates a 50 year anniversary of the Incorporation of the R-4 Fire Protection District, which exists through the focus and dedication of not only the board of directors, but the community of which it serves. Goals at times are felt that they are not reachable. But through the focus, patience and constant support of not only the community but the volunteers and their spouses, this goal has been reached. A lot of sacrifice has been given of family time and behind the scene work. For that we thank you and mentioned that they are also a cornerstone in this great facility.

"I would like to read a quote by one of our retired firemen: "Things we do for ourselves dies with us... What we do for others remains and is eternal."

"Thank you seems like a small thing to say but it is heartfelt. We have an appreciation for this fine community that we serve and for all of our volunteers over the years. Without this type of support, the goals of this district would not be obtainable.

"We would like to thank not only the architect Klinger and Associates but Bleigh Construction and its sub contractors as well as United State Bank for arranging the lease/purchase financing.

Munzlinger thanked the crowd for showing the support for not only this department and all of the departments in Lewis County. "Your dedication and those that volunteer make it possible for the departments. They support and protect us and work with the law enforcement. Lewis County is blessed to have radio communications. Many areas do not have these.

"Thanks again for your support and thanks to those-who helped with the accomplishment of the building," said Munzlinger.

Parrish also thanked the crowd for their support. "The building and trucks are a symbol of the department. Without pay the departments help at traffic accidents and fire. They do this to help you," he said.

Parrish said, They don't do it for the fancy trucks, they do this because ' they care. All of our departments are lucky - blessed. So many other departments around the state, fight with each other or don't get along, Our departments, work with and support each other, let's give them a hand."

Edmonston cut the ribbon to officially acknowledge the opening of the great facility for the community.

Ewing/Maywood R-4 Fire Station District sold the previous buildings in the fall of 2008. A large building was constructed by Bleigh Construction of Hannibal.

The concrete from the older station remained as parking and a place to dry hoses.

The new building is 50x120 feet, has four truck bays, kitchen and large dining/training room, office, two rest rooms, and upper level storage.
