A Central City man is in the Muhlenberg County Detention Center today on charges stemming from the death of a five month-old child on

Thursday, Aug. 12.

Michael Callahan, 28, was arraigned in Muhlenberg District Court on Monday, Aug. 16 before Judge Terry Earle.

A preliminary hearing is set for 10 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 23.

According to a Central City Police Department news release, officers were called to the Central Motel, 300 East Everly Brothers Blvd., at 9:41 a.m. Thursday after receiving a report of an unresponsive child. The girl was pronounced dead at the scene by the Muhlenberg County Coroner's Office.

Police Chief Brent Roberson said he could not release the name of the infant.

The hotel room where the infant was found was occupied by Callahan, who lived there with his girlfriend and their two children--the five month-old and an 18-month-old girl,

Roberson said.

The five month-old was taken to the Kentucky Medical Examiners office in Madisonville. Ricky King, a deputy coroner, said the preliminary cause of death was head trauma.

Roberson said Callahan was brought in for questioning Thursday afternoon and was arrested at 8 p.m. Thursday. The girlfriend was not charged, Roberson said.

The 18-month-old was placed into the care of another family member, Roberson said.

The investigation is ongoing by the Central City Police Department
