The Bailey Board of Commissioners on Monday night adopted a new weed and grass control ordinance which sets fines up to $250 for violations in addition to the cost of removing vegetation or other material.

The motion to approve the revised ordinance passed by unanimous vote. The new ordinance replaces several sections of the previous code of ordinances in Chapter 92 headed "Nuisances, Health and Sanitation." The code deals with other types of nuisances and health hazards besides overgrown grass, such as trash, garbage, or standing water.

The new rule requires that grass and other vegetation be kept cut below a height of ten inches. The code also requires property owners to maintain public rights of way that adjoin their property.

In other business, the board got an update on work done on the town hall to remove mold by Carolina Lead Abatement, Inc. The mold removal was complete and successful, commissioners were told. Now the town needs to take steps to prevent mold from returning. The problem seems to be water coming over the top a wall that was not intended to be an exterior wall.

The town is looking at covering the wall and capping the top of wall at the roof. The town has received two bids and an oral estimate, and needs to get at least one more written proposal. The board may have to have a special meeting to consider bids.

The board also approved $2,090 for repairs to equipment at town wells in response to needs identified during a recent inspection.

The board discussed but took no action on a request to set up a display for the Twin County Museum and Hall of Fame in the Town Hall. The display is now at the Country Doctor Museum.

The board also discussed a promotional offer by Eastern Carolina Propane Gas of Wilson to supply heating fuel for the town. The board directed the town clerk to find out if the present supplier, AmeriGas, will match the offer by Eastern Carolina, and to seek information from other suppliers.
