If you ask some people, they'll say that everybody has one hidden talent that just needs to be brought out of them. With a little push, that talent can develop into a passion and possibly a career. Even with a little luck, that talent could turn into a life-changing revelation.

At the Mantorville Art Guild, you'll find many people following that calling. Walking into the building on a normal day, you'll see plenty of handcrafted objects. All of this artwork represents a throwback to when handmade objects were the norm.

"How could you not love a place where people bring in stuff like this?" Cheryl Anderson, a member of the Art Guild board, asked. "You see a lot of people go to Wal-Mart or a bigger store to find things now, but a place like this is special because of the things we have."

A tour with Anderson showed every type of object that the Art Guild had to offer. In one corner, there were turkey feathers that had been dyed to form a picture inside it. In another, there were several paintings made with a variety of methods. Another turn showed an American Girl Doll clothing rack that was complete with cheerleading outfits for every high school in the area.

"There's something here for everyone," Anderson said.

While the retail aspect is common for any local business, where the Art Guild truly shines is in its effort to introduce people to the world of art. The Art Guild puts on several activities year round including events for the kids such as scarecrow making and pumpkin painting.

The Art Guild also features a summer camp where kids can help develop their artistic abilities. The camp divides kids into ten person groups and allows them a hands-on experience.

"To use your talents in a small group is a benefit," Anderson explained. "In art classes, you'll have around 30 kids and it's hard to give feedback to everyone. When you have ten, it's beneficial."

Anderson says she's had many kids return after a first trip through the camp and many find their artistic calling through the activities.

"It's a hobby that they can do on their own," Anderson stated.

"There's no electronics that are needed and it's a lot of what they want to create. That's what's great about art. There's really no wrong way of doing it."

The Art Guild also has several services such as a donation area which features books and supplies. They also feature many books from local writers who want to get their material out into the public.

With so many things to offer, the Art Guild is a busy place, but Anderson believes that it would be busier if people knew it was there.

"I'll go into Kasson and tell people about it," Anderson recalls. "They'll ask me 'What is it?' and 'Where it is?' Not enough local people know we are here and it's a great place to come and visit."
