Participants invited to Nov. 19 event to be held at Ely City Hall

An upcoming event at City Hall is being billed as an opportunity for area residents to learn more about the property tax system and local budgets.

The Citizens League, in conjunction with NAIOP Minnesota — a commercial real estate development association-is holding several focus groups across the state to gather ideas on how people can become more knowledgeable and involved in their local budget and taxation process.

The Ely event is slated for Thursday, Nov. 19, from 4 to 6 p.m.

The Citizens League is looking for property taxpayers, both commercial and residential, to join an upcoming focus group in Ely.

The focus of the effort is to produce insights for policy makers who are considering improvements.

"You needn't be a tax expert. In fact, we want to hear from the average homeowner or commercial property owner who'd like to better understand their property tax statements and the process that leads to the creation of these statements," said Pahoua Hoffman, policy director for the Citizens League.

"By listening to property taxpayers, we hope to learn about the barriers to understanding and also get some insights into how the process could be improved from their perspective."

Property taxpayers interested in participating in the November 19 focus group can sign up online at http://tinyurl.com/p8svxyc.

Those who sign up and complete a brief survey will be eligible to be one of the 10 selected to participate and will receive a $25 gift card at the end of the focus group.
