Eugene (Gino) Nivan Buchignani died on Oct. 27, 2015 at the age of 70. Eugene was born to Roslyn (Pigoni) and Nivan Buchignani. His entry into this world was marked by the jubilation of World War II ending that day. Gino's first and last days were in Dry Creek. He was born and passed within a several-mile radius of where his ancestors originally settled from Lucca, Italy.

His ranch was first farmed by his grandfather, who planted grapes as well as prunes. Working the land was in his blood. His vineyard bore witness to the meticulous detail of his dedication to family tradition. He had a natural inclination for gardening, too-it came easily to him. He was an avid sportsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing and mushroom hunting.

Gino loved playing sports during his years at Geyserville High School. He was a passionate Giants fan and a skilled poker player. His son inherited his love of driving his own race car at local speedways. The Buchignani name, always unpronounceable outside of Dry Creek/Geyserville, became commonplace again at the racetrack. His extraordinary persona touched so very many people in so many ways. His loving heart was larger than life. He was a fixture in the area — truly loved and respected. Eugene never thought of himself-he lived his entire life for others.

Material things did not impress him and he relished a simple existence. His presence will be greatly missed. Gino had an illustrious career with CalTrans that spanned 42 years and four counties. If anyone has driven in northern California, he or she has certainly passed through one of his many projects. He was a well-respected co-worker and supervisor, considered by many to be a great mentor. He was preceded in death by his sister Virginia Baumgardner, mother Roslyn and father Nivan. He is survived by his wife, Donna Buchignani, daughter Gina Buchignani and son Gino "Buck" Giorgio Buchignani.

He is also survived by brother; Ronald (Dean) Buchignani, sister; Natalene Buchignani, aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

"If our beloved Gino had to take his final ride, we find comfort in the fact that he was with his absolute best friend, his dog, Rusty," his family said. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at Fred Young Funeral Home in Cloverdale on Friday, Nov. 6. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Asti on Saturday, Nov. 7. Interment will follow at Olive Hill Cemetery, Geyserville.
