Sandra Topete was more than up to the challenge for the West Sioux girls cross country team.

Topete won the Class B individual title at the West Sioux cross country meet held on a windy and downright cold day at Hawarden Golf Course.

How cold was it? The one-mile fun run was soon dubbed the "not-so fun run" and only five folks joined in.

Topete and the Lady Falcons had good motivation Thursday -food. Sandra enjoyed an oreo mix after winning in a time of 16:42.50. "It was exciting," the sophomore said, enjoying her just desserts.

Sophomore Dana Weerheim was third in 17:13.46, freshman Jaylen Blankenship 10th in 18:25.14, and senior Tristan Bloyer 22d in 20:21.78.

"All the girls did wonderful," coach Tami Eilts said. "Sandra could not start the season with us, but her times have been coming down. It's the 400s we do and the speed work.”

For the boys, Gustavo Viru-ete and Damian Ortiz both earned medals. Ortiz was 10th in 20:24.39 and Viruete 17th in 22:13.10, and both were happy with the results.
