'Without blood donors... our son Nash will die'

(As told by Nash's mom, Lori Lucken Bak, Winger, Minn., to United Blood Services)

Nash's story is not unique, but it is very special to us. During our infant son Nash's six week check-up, the doctor came into the room and said "Call your husband. We are taking you by ambulance to the Pediatric ICU in Fargo. Your son's hemoglobin is a three."

I didn't know what that meant. He looked fine to me; maybe a little pale, more tired than a normal newborn, and colicky so I thought. But the doctor's reaction indicated it was serious. I came to learn that hemoglobin is what carries oxygen throughout the body, including the heart and brain. Without adequate hemoglobin, Nash could go into cardiac arrest if agitated too much.

We traveled to Fargo not knowing what was to come. When Nash was about six months old, he began treatments at the University of Mary in Minneapolis where he received a port in his chest for transfusions and medicine.

He is 16 months old now and developing and learning like other one-year-olds; the difference being that he has already received over 70 blood transfusions. Nash must continue to receive blood transfusions every three weeks in order to live. Because of Nash's illness, we have made it our personal mission to get the word out to as many people as we can of the importance of blood donations.

There is no known substitute for blood and that is the scariest reality we live with each day. Without blood donors, our son Nash will die.

Blood drive Jan. 6: We as a community can do something to help Nash -- and many others — by donating blood at the Jan. 6, Bagley Blood Drive at the American Legion Auditorium from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. You may call Darol or Marilyn Melby at 657-2364 to make an appointment. Schedulers will also be calling you, so please be ready to sign up to share this "Gift of Life." This blood drive is sponsored by Bagley Rotary Club and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Many will benefit from your donation. Thank you in advance for your graciousness. God Bless You.
