A mess is one description of the south side of the Akron Senior Citizens Center Friday morning.

An avalanche from snow on the center's roof came tumbling down damaging the south side's gutters, downspouts and air conditioners as it buried the sidewalk area in 4 feet of snow.

"Snow was everywhere," said Akron Meal Site Manager Barb Mitchell.

"It was all down when I got here about 6:30 a.m.," said Mitchell, adding snow was piled high from the southwest door to the east end of the building. "Luckily, nobody was here."

Akron city employees Dan Rolfes and Bob Popken used the city's bucket truck to loosen snow still on the roof while city employees Josh Groon, Gary Horton and Todd Swancutt used the city's skid loader, pay loader and dump truck to haul it away.

The crew finished just before the lunch crowd began arriving at about 11 a.m. but even at 1 p.m., the small amounts of snow were still coming down off the roof.

According to Akron Public Works Director Gary Horton, city employees also cleared snow from City Hall's carport as a precaution.

As of press time Monday, Horton was still waiting for companies to submit estimates.
