The Liberty County School Board unanimously voted to fund a third School Resource Officer (SRO) position at Tuesday night's meeting.

"They didn't hesitate, there was no discussion...I was very pleased," said School Superintendent Gay Uzzell, who was less successful when she made the same request last Thursday of the Liberty County Commission.

And she's hoping to get one more. "I'm committed to getting a fourth one," she said. "We'll find the funding somewhere. I don't care how many grants I have to write."

Safe School Funding is already paying for two SRO positions at a cost of $29, 500 for each, with an additional $3, 000 for seasons officers accompany teams involved in district and state playoffs.

The new superintendent will now have an SRO in place at Tolar School, LCHS and Hosford School. She wants a fourth SRO for the Early Learning Center, located on the same site as the school district offices. "There are 143 children, from infants through age four, at that site," she said, along with around 20 high-school students and district staff employees.
