The White River National Wildlife Refuge and the Arkansas Highway Department are combining on a project to make access to the refuge's visitor center in St. Charles easier.

Arkansas Highway 1 in St. Charles is being expanded to include two turn lanes off Highway 1 to the entrance to the refuge's visitor center.

"Over the next few weeks, pardon the mess and minor inconvenience as you pass through St. Charles to visit the refuge or are just passing through," refuge manager Dennis Sharp said in a statement. "Be aware of the barrels for your safety and for the safety of the men working in that area."

Construction started Aug. 20 and will continue until Sept. 28, depending upon the weather.

"Thank you for your cooperation. When this project is through, it will be a breeze to turn off Highway 1 to access the visitor center. We hope to see you here," Sharp said.
