Luella M. Nelson, 87, of Salem passed away on January 1, 2012 at her home in Salem. Funeral mass will be held on Thursday, January 5 at 10:30 am at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Salem. Burial will follow in St. Patrick's Cemetery in Montrose. Visitation will begin at 9 am on Wednesday with a 3 pm rosary and a 7 pm prayer service all at Kinzley Funeral Home in Salem.

Luella M. Heiberger was born on November 1, 1924 near Bridgewater, SD to Leo and Anna (Lanners) Heiberger. She grew up in the Bridgewater/Salem area and graduated from St. Mary's High School in Salem. On May 2, 1946 she married Carl Nelson at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Salem. They farmed in the Montrose area until 1977 when they moved to California for 7 years. When they moved back in 1984 they made their home in Salem where they lived the remainder of their lives. Carl passed away in 2002.

Luella was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Salem where she was in the altar society. She was also in the Catholic Order of Foresters, the Christian Mothers, and the Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed playing cards, cooking and most of all spending time with her family.

Luella is survived by; her sons, James of Fairfield, CA and John "Jack" (Rita) of Montrose, SD; her daughter, Donna (Bob) Schnider of Piedmont, SD; five grandchildren, James, Shawn, and Jason Nelson, and Kristi and Joshua Schnider; nine great-grandchildren, Justin, Trevor, Riley, James, Christopher, Shelby, Brett, Daniel, and Carly; two brothers, Cy (Millie) Heiberger and Gene (Helene) Heiberger of Salem; one sister, Audrey Meyers of Silt, CO; two brothers-in-law, Charles Malloy of Timber Lake, SD and Dean Erikson of Salem; one sister-in-law, Mary Heiberger of Glenwood Springs, CO; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, one brother, Steve, and three sisters, Charlotte Malloy, Leona Erikson, and Margaret Weber.
