Council City Council

The Council City Council approved a 3% increase on the water and sewer rates during Tuesday evening's City Council meeting.

There was barely a quorum, only three council members were present (Mayor Bruce Gardner and Councilmember Barry McDaniel were absent), and all three voted to approve the base fee increase of 80 cents for water and 30 cents for sewer. They did so with some reluctance, however.

Tree lighting

The council gave their approval to Chamber of Commerce Ken Bell's plan to have a real Christmas Tree on display in the City Park for the city's holiday decorations. The tree would be lit up on the night of the parade during a lighting ceremony.

"Sounds like a great thing for the community," said Council President Dan Huter.

Public Works Supervisor Dave Wilson indicated he would be willing to lend a hand in the tree installation process.

The Chamber Christmas Celebration is scheduled for December 12.

Business Park

Economic Development Coordinator Francee Wassard said that there is currently quite a bit of turnover taking place in the city's Business Park. While a few businesses have made plans to move out, Wassard said, there is interest in at least three of the vacant spots.

Lagoon troubles

Wilson reported that his crews are having some issues with the city's lagoon, which was shut down due to concerns about discharge into the river. They are working closely with the Department of Environmental Quality and the Idaho Rural Water Association to remedy the problem.

"We're trying to get back up and running," he said, noting that they are also having some problems with algae growth in one of the ponds. Water leak Two local residents came before the city council to discuss their water bill after a high bill alerted them to a leak in their plumbing system. Because the couple had responded quickly to the problem and were proactive in addressing it, the city council indicated a willingness to work with them on the extra charges incurred.

"A lot of people wouldn't have bothered trying to fix the problem until it got really out of hand," said Wilson.
