The City of New Meadows has opted to continue their agreement with the Adams County Sheriff's office to help fund the salary of a deputy patrol officer.

The city will contribute $30,600 to the Sheriffs Department budget in quarterly payments of $7,650.

In the past, there have been some in the New Meadows area that have felt they haven't gotten enough attention from the Sheriff's Department, but according to City Clerk Mac Quails, the communication between the city and the department has gotten better recently.

"It's sometimes a challenge getting on the same page, but we've seen improvements," Quails said. "It seems like the city as a v/hole has been working more closely together (with the Sheriffs Department)"

Quails added that one current challenge is the fact that there are no deputies residing in New Meadows following the tragic death of Leroy Matthews, the retirement of Scot Kump, and the resignation of Captain Jeff Brown (who moved to Texas).

The Sheriff's Department has, however, hired former New Meadows resident Brian Yoakum, who may return to the city once he completes his POST certification.

The language of the contract includes provisions for the Sheriffs Department to provide certain duties in return for the money.

These include:

Adding additional routine patrols at times determined by either the Sheriff or the City Council/The presence of officer during community events. Enforcement of city ordinances. Assisting the Animal Control officer by issuing citations. Providing the City a quarterly written report summarizing the activity within the city.

And an appearance by the Sheriff or a Deputy to provide an oral report on what has been happening in the community.
