A US Border Patrol K9 team working at the Highway 85 checkpoint north of Ajo alerted to a vehicle traveling in the northbound lane on Tuesday, September 8. During a secondary inspection, agents found 177 pounds of marijuana, which has an estimated street value of $141,600. Also discovered was nearly one pound of heroin worth $11,000. The two subjects, both US citizens, were arrested.

In a separate incident on the same day, agents working out of the Ajo Station arrested an illegal alien from Mexico in a remote desert area. During processing, a check of the Automatic Fingerprint Identification System revealed the subject had a conviction of rape by force/fear.
