Dave Brown gets top prize; Paper claims 7 awards

Arizona Range News photographer Dave Brown was named statewide 2009 Photographer of the Year for non-daily newspapers in Arizona.

The top award was one of seven awards won by the staff of the Willcox newspaper Saturday night at the Arizona Newspaper Association/Associated Press Managing Editor Awards at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communications.

The newspaper competes in the category of non-daily circulation under 3,500.

Brown also won first place for Best Feature Photograph for a photograph entitled, "Heat of Competition."

Brown nearly swept the Best Sports Photograph category with a second place for the San Pedro Valley News-Sun with "Baseball Pitcher," and third place for the Range News with "Cameron Bonner."

He also won second place in Best Feature Photo Layout for "Year in Review," along with fellow Range Newsstaffers Ainslee S. Wittig, Carol Breeder, and Steve Reno.

Individually, Broeder won third place in the category of Best News Feature with her story, "Real Life Hero Honored."

The newspaper was hon-' ored with third place for both Departmental News and Copy-writing Excellence and Community Service/Journalistic Achievement.

"I am very proud to be a part of the Arizona Range News, where this talented staff works so well together to produce not only informative newspapers, but also award-winning newspapers," said Managing Editor Ainslee S. Wittig.

"The awards for our editorial staff - Dave, who makes the Range News visually appealing every week, and Carol, who writes unbiased, * thorough and informative articles - are well deserved," she added.

"Awards are great and I congratulate the staff on winning," said publisher Jane Amari. "But the way the Range News is an integral part of the community makes it a winner every day."
