A record-setting giant elk will be on display at the Lake D'Arbonne Sportsman's Expo in Farmerville on Sept. 24 and 25. The bull elk, taken by Tommy Waldrop of West Monroe in 2007, originally scored 506. After the drying period, the final score through Safari Club International was 485 typical, setting a new world record. Waldrop killed the elk in Saskatchewan, Canada.

Waldrop's prize elk will be part of a display of numerous game mounts at the Sportsman's Expo, an event being presented by the Union Parish Chamber of Commerce. The Expo will be at the Willie Davis Jr. Recreation Center, 116 Cox Ferry Rd., just off Hwy. 33 (Ruston Highway), on Friday, 2 to 8 p.m, and Saturday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

For more information call 368-3947 or see DarbonneSportsmansExpo.c om. Admission is $3 for those aged 12 and up. Other features of the Expo include vendors of hunting and fishing gear, boats, a hunting camp, vehicles, food, displays, and activities for kids. Waldrop, owner of Extreme Engine Service of West Monroe, previously dis-played the record elk at the Safari Club International Convention in 2008 in Reno, Nevada.

The North American Elk belongs to the red deer family. It is the largest species of red deer found in the world and is second only to the moose in size. The North American elk is also known as Wapiti, a Shawnee Indian name for "white rump".
