Owingsville Police Chief Todd Tout said he and his officers plan to become more aggressive in curbing illegal drug use.

Not that they've been permissive in the past. They're just renewing their vows, so to speak.

Tout announced his stepped-up plan, which includes a drug-tip line, at city council the day after the community turned out in force at an anti-drug rally.

At the request of Mayor Don Kincaid, the police chief listed what he and his officers are going to do while being careful to avoid violating anyone's civil rights:

--Conduct extra patrols in areas suspected of having drug activity.

--Increase surveillance of suspects by using night-vision goggles.

--Take photos of people who frequent places where drugs are suspected and recording their license numbers for later reference.

--Run KASPER reports on suspects (KASPER is a system that tracks controlled substance prescriptions dispensed within the state).

--Make traffic stops of suspects, if probable cause exists.

--Seek more search warrants and/or arrest warrants from the county attorney.

The number to the drug-tip line is 674-6361. Those with information regarding the illegal sale or use of narcotics are asked to call the number after 4:30 p.m. and leave the information, such as the name and address of the suspect. The calls can be anonymous, and there is no caller ID installed on the tip line.

Information can be relayed before 4:30 p.m. by calling 674-2000.
