The season is turning on the mountain with a chill in the air and a dash of color in the leaves. If your plans for the fall include hunting or just a last weekend camping get-away, the Forest Service offers some safety reminders.

Jon Warder, Forest Fire manager, said, "Although it is the fall season, we can have high potential for fires due to dry conditions on the Forest. One of the most common causes of forest fires is unattended campfires. We have already experienced a one-acre fire this fall due to a campfire that was not properly extinguished. Please remember to drown your campfire with water and stir the water and dirt until all the ashes are cold to the touch. It is important to properly and completely extinguish your campfire even if you plan to leave camp for only a short period of time."

The fall season is also characterized by sudden and

sometimes severe weather changes. Plan for potentially severe weather by bringing adequate clothing and equipment. A good safety precaution is to let your family or friends know where you plan to be and when you plan to return from your trip to the mountain. By leaving your plans with others, you can be contacted in case of family emergencies or if concerns for your well-being arise.

Ground conditions will become wetter and the potential for resource damage from motorized travel increases as it gets later in the fall. Use designated roads and trails for motorized travel. Motorized travel maps can be obtained from the local Forest Service office.
