Granite Shoals Mayor Pro Tem Dennis Maier defeated fellow challenger Peggy Metzger, winning the mayor's post, and the sewer system bond vote failed, according to unofficial results released Saturday night.

The municipal sewer system bond vote failed with 346 voters (54.75 percent) saying nay.

"We only lost by 60 votes. During the campaign a lot of false information was circulated and it is difficult to counter

misinformation," said Granite Shoals Mayor Frank Reilly, a proponent of the bond issue. Maier took 52.72 percent

of the popular vote with 320 votes over Metzger's 287 votes (47.28 percent).

Maier succeeds Frank Reilly as mayor, who announced in March that he would not seek another term.

"I'm pleased to be elected and I'm looking forward to

serving the community," said the soon-to-be Mayor Maier. "I'm disappointed that the sewer bond failed but we will proceed in a positive and constructive fashion."

In the two other contested Granite Shoals races Saturday night returns showed:

In city council, Place

1, Shirley King (360 votes, 59.7 percent) defeated Terry Hartman (243, 40.3 percent).

In city council, Place 3, Eric Tanner (351, 60.62 percent) defeated Don Harrison (228, 39.38 percent).

Place 5 City Council-member Carl Brugger ran unopposed.
