The annual Labor Day weekend celebration, wherein the words Oatmeal and excitement appear together in the same context for about the only time all year, was another rip-roaring success.

The event, which began in 1978 as a spoof of numerous other summer festivals after the powers-that-be decided that Oatmeal the community no longer merited a designation on state roadmaps, once again featured baked goods, a beauty pageant, pet parade, a 5K run, a barbecue and any number of oatmeal-related jokes and pranks.

Lt. Col. Charles Caraway of the Oatmeal Air Force once again did his best to make the event the ultimate Oatmeal experience, battling rough winds while flying overhead in a valiant attempt to shower festival goers with 300 pounds of oatmeal.

"It was a very successful Oatmeal Festival," said Carolyn Cross, secretary/run director of the Oatmeal Festival bowl (sic) of directors.

The festival is a two-pronged affair these days with events held in the Oatmeal community three miles southwest of Bertram and in downtown Bertram.

Proceeds from both segments of the festival go for charitable purposes, with money raised at the Oatmeal events benefiting the preservation and upkeep of the community's historic school house and community center.

Money raised at the Bertram events is for scholarships and community non-profit groups.
