Miner said he's guided by several principles. He said, "I believe in being ethical, honest and accountable." He noted that change is good as long as it's for the better.

When it comes to making decisions affecting the county, Miner said, "I never did anything without weighing all aspects." He continued, "Even if there was something I wanted to do, I didn't do it if it wasn't going to be economically feasible."

Miner thinks every elected official should weigh both sides and look at things economically. "It all goes toward being fiscally responsible," he said. If he's elected will look at both sides. "At some times we can all be the devil's advocate, to get the board to look at both sides of what we're trying to accomplish."

The way the economy is running, Miner sees no increase to revenue. And input costs are up, he explained, using the costs for oiling roads as an example.

Two areas Miner will focus on if elected are getting the most for the people with the least amount dollar-wise, and examining the tax structure of the county to see if there's any way the commissioners

can help the county so taxes are equitable for everyone.

"I believe in competitive bidding. The county should bid everything out competitively, whether it's local or not, to get the most kick for the money," Miner said.

Miner has been in the cattle business since he was 16 years old. Following graduation from Gregory High School, he spent three years in the service and then worked for Chrysler in Trenton, MI. His mom and dad kept his cattle while he was gone.

During a decade at Chrysler,

Miner moved from press operator to foreman to general foreman. During the same time period, he earned an associate's degree in industrial management from

Henry Ford Community College.

Miner's ultimate goal was always to be a rancher. Working at Chrysler, Miner was able to put enough away to buy his way in to the cattle business. He returned home in 1978 and has been ranching ever since.

Miner spent six years on the Gregory School District board in the mid-1990's. "I believe everyone should take a shot at serving in office," he said. "Unless you try to serve on these boards it's hard to determine what you can do, and what you can't do."

Miner has been an active lifetime member of the American Legion for over 45 years. He's held local commander and county offices in the organization.

Dennis and his wife Alice have four adult children.
