William Griffith

William J. Griffith, 78, of Montrose passed away on Monday, April 26, 2010 at the VA Hospital in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 AM on Thursday, April 29 at the Montrose United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the Montrose Cemetery with full military rights. Visitation will begin at 9 AM on Wednesday with family present from 6:30-8 PM at Kinzley Funeral Home in Salem.

William J. Griffith was born on August 30, 1931 in Montrose to Harold E. and Shirley (Dickinson) Griffith. He was raised in the Montrose area where he attended Montrose schools, graduating in 1949. After school he worked in the family construction business driving a gravel truck. In 1952 he entered the Army and served in Japan and Korea during the Korean Conflict. In 1954 he was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant. After returning he entered Dakota Wesleyan College in Mitchell. It was there he played football and was awarded Ail-American Honors as a center. He also met Carol Ann Dodds and they were married in November of 1956. After college Bill owned Griffith Motor Company with his father. He later owned and operated a gas truck and then became a partner with his brother Curtis in Griff's Service where he worked until retiring in 1994.

William was a member of the Montrose United Methodist Church, the Montrose American Legion post, the Montrose Masonic Lodge, and also the El Riad Shrine. He loved hunting and fishing and also spending time with friends and family.

William is survived by: one son, John of Montrose; two daughters, Ann (Bill) Yount and Carolyn (Tom) Jacobsen both of Montrose; four grandchildren, Jessica Rowley, Melissa Yount, Jeffery Yount, and Michael Griffith; three great-grandchildren, Emily, Olivia, and Xavier; two brothers, Curt (Lois) of Montrose and Harold Jr. "Corky" (Mary Lou) of Manteca, CA; and special friends Betty Marty and her family.

He was preceded in death by: his beloved wife Carol in 1985; his parents; one sister, Shirley; and two brothers, Herbert and Lenny, www.kinzleyfh.com.
