Local American Quarter Horse enthusiast, Ryder Carmichael of Canistota, SD has recently been named as an American Quarter Horse Foundation Scholarship Recipient. Carmichael will receive $8000.00 to help with tuition at South Dakota State University where he will be attending this fall. The Foundation's Scholarship Program awards outstanding members for their dedication to higher education. Recipients are selected based on academic achievement, references and participation in equine-related activities.

Carmichael is the 18 year old son of John and Pam Carmichael of Canistota. Ryder has been competing in equine competitions since he was three years old. He went on to be a loyal 4-H member for 10 years where he won many championships at the state level. He is a lifetime AQHA member and has trained his own horses for competitions. He plans on continuing to be very involved in the horse industry. In addition to his equine activities, he was senior class Vice President, was a member of the National Honor Society, and a very enthusiastic member of pep band and jazz band. Ryder will be attending SDSU for Civil Engineering and Music. He would like to send special thanks to Mr. Dawson for supporting him and his love of music, and all those who could see past the school walls and encouraged him to be successful in whatever he chose.
