Cheney School District officials have named Mark Kiver as the new Cheney High School boys' soccer head coach. He takes over for former Blackhawks head coach Steve Davis, who stepped down in December 2009 after 10-years with the program.

Kiver began his soccer career as a player for the Blackhawks when the program first started in 1984. After graduation in 1986 he attended Eastern Washington University majoring in recreational management.

When it comes to coaching soccer Kiver is not only a busy man but also someone who has soccer experience at a variety of levels. He began his coaching career in 1989 coaching the CHS junior varsity team, leading the Blackhawks until 1997.

He was the North Central girls' JV coach from 1994-1995, and the Indians girls' varsity coach in 1996. In 1995 Kiver also began head coaching duties with the Spokane Shadow/Sky-hawks, leading several girls premier club teams until 2001. The Skyhawks club team in Spokane eventually became the Shadow Youth Club, one of the top premier clubs in Washington.

Kiver has coached the Spokane Storm FC Cheney boys and girls club teams since 2004, and has served as the Shadow Storm FC U-ll regional director and the Storm FC Cheney technical director since 2009. He has also been the CHS boys' varsity assistant coach under Davis since 2002, helping lead the Blackhawks to the post season each year, including a trip to the 3A state final four in 2004 where Cheney finished fourth, and the 2A state final four in 2008 and 2009, finishing second both times.

Kiver is enthusiastic, passionate and ready to take on the challenge of coaching the Blackhawks. He looks forward to taking on the responsibility to continue their success, something that has been attained through not only his and Davis' efforts, but mainly from the players and their parents, who put in tons of volunteer hours with club teams to help create and improve the Cheney soccer program.

"I don't see a lot of changes right now," Kiver said. "There are a lot of reasons why the program has had success, so you don't want to go in and re-invent the wheel."

Kiver has already had an initial meeting with his returning players and feels there is an excitement for the coming season. Practice for all spring sports begins March 1.
