Survivor Activities Committee chairs WP Relay for Life 2010

After months of planning, the West Plains Relay for Life event co-chairs, committee chairs and team captains can hardly believe that show time is just a few weeks away. This year's Relay is scheduled for May 14-15 at the EWU Woodward Field. It is the American Cancer Society's signature fundraiser to advance cancer research, education, advocacy and treatment. The event is open to everyone in the West Plains community. As Survivor Committee co-chairs, each of us has a personal cancer story to remember that motivates us to volunteer in this annual community effort to fight the scourge of cancer.

A focal feature of every Relay for Life is to recognize and honor its cancer survivors. After all, they have much to celebrate! If you are or someone you know is a cancer survivor, please consider joining us for the early evening activities on Friday, May 14. Following sign-in at 5:45 p.m. at the survivor tent area, each survivor and caregiver (if present) will receive a free, specially-designed tee-shirt. The survivors then will have an opportunity to enjoy what has become a favorite activity: applying their painted handprints and signatures on a fabric sheet.

At 6:30 p.m. the survivors and their caregivers walk the celebratory first lap around the track, followed by a complimentary on-site dinner. The 2010 menu will consist of chicken primavera, donated by Lenny's American and Italian Fine Cuisine, along with a salad, breadsticks, dessert and beverage. All dinner items are generously contributed by local businesses. We encourage all survivors who are able to remain for the moving 10 p.m. Luminary Ceremony which celebrates the lives of survivors as well as those lost to cancer.

To assure there is ample food for everyone at the dinner, the Survivor Committee has begun to create a list of any survivors/caregivers who would like to be included. Cancer survivors do not have to be part of a relay team to be involved in any part of the survivor celebration. Even though you may have participated in past years, it is necessary to pre-register every year for the survivor/caregiver activities. For more information or to pre-register, please call Bonnie Alvy at (509) 559-5986 or go online to www.relayforlife.org/CheneyWA and sign up under "survivor."

We invite you to attend any or all of the above activities. Please join us!
