The cities of Cheney and Airway Heights have each earned Well City Awards from the Association of Washington Cities Employee Benefit Trust. The two are among 82 cities receiving the award.

The award is based on meeting stringent best practice standards in employee health promotion.

City employees with strong worksite wellness programs average $300 per person per year fewer healthcare claims than those with no wellness program. The benefit moves beyond a monetary value and into one of worker morale and

increased productivity in a positive working environment.

Wellness programs and activities at the worksites are highly effective in encouraging employees to embrace a wellness philosophy, as well as promoting the health of employees, and in turn the cities are shown to operate more efficiently, according to a press release.

AWC Trust members that earn next year's Well City Award will receive a 2 percent premium discount on Regence BlueShield/Asuris Northwest Health employee and spouse premiums. The discount will be applied to 2013 premium.
