Blackhawks down Riverside and Deer Park to stay unbeaten in GNL

The Cheney boys' and girls' track teams posted wins over Riverside and Deer Park in double-dual meet action last Wednesday. The Blackhawk girls beat Deer Park 101-49 and Riverside 91-59 while the boys knocked off the Stags 88-48 and had a closer time of it in beating the Rams 81-62.

The wins set up a showdown for the Great Northern League title on Wednesday, May 12, between Cheney, visiting West Valley and Pullman.

On the track, Shelby Maurer helped pace the girls with a first place finish in the 100-meters in a time of 12.77 seconds, with Briana Estrellado third in 13.46. Estrellado was second in the 200 in 27.23.

Janessa Day won the 400 with a new personal record of 1:00.99 with Kelsey Filmore third (1:04.46) and Annika Kuula sixth. April Batchelor finished third in the 800 (2:32.63) with Kendall Dunn and Amanda Batchelor fifth and sixth.

Sanne Holland breezed to an eight-second win over Riverside's Jess Mildes in the 1,600 in 5:26.79. Savannah Phelan was third in the 3,200 in 12:46.38, while Kali Brooks, Amie Zachman and Sydney Brock finished fourth through sixth. Chelsie Breen won the 100 and 300 hurdles in 16.79 and 49.47, with Erica Orth fourth and third respectively.

The 4x200 relay team of Day, Shaley Ham, Emily Stralser and Maurer finished first in 1:47.76, while the 4x400 team of Stralser, Breen, Estrellado and Filmore was first with a season best of 4:13.74. The 4x100 team of Danielle Gilmour, Jessica Leong, Taylor Moore and Brittany Schwendiman was second in 1:06.52.

Olivia Dehner led the Cheney girls in the field events, capturing first in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, and first in the triple jump with a PR of 34-03. Erin Clark took first in the pole vault with a PR of 9 feet even while Mary Cole was second in the discus with a toss of 78-10, and Ham was second in the high jump at 4-08.

Gilmour was third in the pole vault (PR 8-06), Kali Schwendiman and Kara Plummer were third and fourth in the discus, Amanda Ward (102-07) and Kendall Case third and fourth in the javelin, and Chazeray Diamede and Kaitlyn Hohrman third and fourth in the triple jump, with Diamede also third in the long jump.

"We hope to carry that performance on to Wednesday (against West Valley and Pullman) and a league title and an undefeated season," girls head coach Tom Stralser said of the meet.

Darez Meriwether led the Cheney boys with a pair of firsts on the track, taking the 100 in 11.30 and the 200 in 23.90, with Dietrich Smith second in the 100 at 11.52, and leading a group that also consisted of Dillon Phelps and Shac air Smith for fourth through sixth in the 200.

Collin Beeler and Phelps went 1-2 in the 400 in 54.52 and 54.58 while Nash Springberry took the 800 with a time of 2:01.10. Devon Poulsen was fourth in the 1,600 in 4:53.15, just over a half second behind first place Reggie Peone of Deer Park. Ian Kuula was third in the 3,200 in 10:59.29, with Corey Klotz-Brooks fifth.

Connor Molter-Gaddy was third in the 110 hurdles in 17.91, and Jeff Pool was third in the 300 hurdles in 47.57. The 4x400 team of DeAngelo Jones, Michael Stralser, Spri ngberry and Beeler took first in 3:37.59 while th! 4x100 team of Dakota Condos, Meriwether, Colt Sutter and Krieg McEuin was second in 46.63.

Jones and Condos led Cheney in the field events. Jones set a new personal best for first in the high jump with a leap of 6-06, and took first in the long jump with a leap of 21-08. Condos took first in the javelin with a toss of 168-08.

Michael Payne was second in the shot put at 46-03 and third in the discus at 107-05, with Condos fourth. Justin Ward was second in the javelin at 143-07, with Sutter fourth.

McEuin was second in the triple jump at 38-00 1/2, with Molter-Gaddy third at 37-09. Dietrich Smith and Shackur Smith tied for third in the high jump (5-06), with Shakur Smith fifth in the long jump and Meriwether and Tony Webber tying for sixth in the high jump.

"It's always fun to have the best teams in the league competing for the title on the last meet of the regular season," boys head coach Todd Hering said of Wednesday's hook up. "No matter what the outcome, it will be exciting."

The next big event for the Blackhawks will be district competition May 21-22 at Eastern Washington University with three berths to 2A state in all event on the line.
