The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission is seeking nominations to its Boating Safety Advisory Council. The commission is looking for individuals to represent educators, anglers and hunters. The deadline for submitting nominations is Oct. 12.

The council assists and advises the commission on administration of its boating safety program, which provides information and education on safe and environmentally sound boating practices to agencies, organizations and individuals statewide. The program also works closely with local marine law enforcement agencies, U.S. Power Squadrons,

U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and other boating safety educational organizations to assist their information, education and/or law enforcement efforts. Council members may be reimbursed for travel and other expenses when attending council meetings. Typically there are two to three meetings a year.

The three-year appointments will be made by Dec. 1, with terms of service commencing on Jan. 1, 2010. When submitting an application or nominating individuals for the council, please consider that state parks serve a culturally diverse population and is committed to representing that diversity in our staffing, volunteers and advisory groups. The agency is especially interested in having representation by women, people of color and people with disabilities. To obtain applications for appointment to the council, call (360) 902-8847 or e-mail james. horan@parks.wa.gov.

The commission manages a diverse system of more than 100 state parks and recreation programs, including long-distance trails, boating safety and winter recreation. The 96-year-old park system will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2013.

The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission thanks the public for supporting state parks.
