More than 250 scholarships will be awarded in 2011-2012 school year

Eastern Washington University'President Rodolfo Arevalo recently announced a newly structured $1 million scholarship program that will reach out to high achieving students.

Starting in 2011-12, the plan calls for Eastern to award more than 250 four-year scholarships, a substantial increase from what is currently offered over the same period. The scholarships reflect EWU's strategic effort to support exceptional students, reduce the time it takes to earn a degree and reduce loan debt.

"This program underscores Eastern as the best value in higher education in the state of Washington," Arevalo said. "This isn't just for students with a high need for financial support, but it is also for students from the many middle income families the university serves."

The program aligns Eastern's existing scholarship capacity so students in a broad range of high-demand academic fields can focus on their studies while knowing they are getting the financial support they need to succeed during their time at EWU.

For new students, this means enhancing EWU's Honors Scholarships to four-year awards and the expansion of the existing Presidential Scholarship from a two-year to a four-year opportunity. Entering Washington resident freshmen with a 3.8 or higher high school GPA or 1250 or higher SAT (math/verbal) who apply for admission to EWU by Feb. 15 are automatically considered for the Presidential Scholarship award.

Eastern is also introducing the FIRST Scholarship award in support of freshman pursuing science, math, engineering and technology programs.

In addition, the university is implementing a new program offering scholarship assistance to students who successfully complete the EWU Running Start program, AP courses and who attend EWU.

The university is also creating additional opportunities for our current students. Eastern's scholarship program will award more two-year scholarships to support studies in high-demand professional areas such as science, math, engineering and technology.

And in an immediate step to meet financial need for eligible low-income students hit by reductions in the State Need Grant program, EWU is providing awards of up to $3,000 this year, through 2013-14 to fill the gap in funding.

Students interested in taking advantage of these scholarship opportunities must apply for admission to EWU and complete the 2011-2012 EWU General Scholarship Application on or before Feb. 15, 2011.
