Yvette Strampe, a 2006 graduate of Cheney High School, will be representing the College of Veterinary Medicine at Washington State University during Commencement on Dec. 11. She is one of eight WSU students being recognized for their achievements.

Strampe transferred to WSU in her sophomore year and made the roster for the women's soccer team. In the year that she played for the team, Yvette made the Pac 10 All-Academic team. She is still active with the soccer team, serving as the volunteer coordinator, but decided to stop playing so that she could devote more time to research, volunteer work and studies as a biochemistry major with the molecular biology option.

A list of Strampe's volunteer and community service activities include: working for three years at the LMK nursing service to provide support for developmentally disabled adults, volunteering at the Pullman Regional Hospital in the emergency department and the birth place and serving as a learning specialist at WSU's Student Support Services as a tutor for general and organic chemistry.

On top of her studies and volunteer work, she has also conducted research in the chemistry department since January 2008 and received a College of Sciences undergraduate summer research mini-grant to support her work, all while maintaining a 3.8 grade point average.

To acknowledge her accomplishments, Strampe has received the Yount/McFadden Scholarship in Biochemistry from the School of Molecular Biosciences, and from the College of Sciences, the William and Mary Lynn Graber Endowment Fund Scholarship for entrepreneurship and innovative leadership and the Endowed Scholarship for pre-medical students.

Strampe plans to apply to medical school for admission fall 2011.
