In a telephone conversation Friday, Aug. 27, Jerry Sipe, Plumas County Environmental Health director, said the base stations were in place for rodent dusting at Plumas-Eureka State Park.

The state health department obtained its permit for pesticide use from the agriculture commissioner to dust rodents for flea abatement. Sipe said the treatment should become effective over the next few days.

The next step will be to trap the park's squirrels and chipmunks to determine the number of rodents and the number of fleas per rodent. Sipe expected that phase to begin Monday, Aug. 30.

Based on survey results, officials from state parks, in cooperation with the county environmental health and state health departments, will make a decision about whether or not to reopen the park's campground for the Labor Day weekend.

That decision was expected late Tuesday or Wednesday, Aug. 31 or Sept. 1, after the newspaper went to press. When it is available, Feather Publishing will post the latest information at plumasnews.com.

In the meantime, Plumas-Eureka State Park remains open to hiking and day use. Lyn Nafzgar, president of the park association, said the park would be open until Sunday, Sept. 26. Regardless of when the campground is reopened, the museum will remain open Fridays through Sundays until Sept. 26.

The state's website, parks.ca.gov, indicates the campground will be reopened in time for the holiday weekend. However, campers should call state park information line at (800) 777-0369 or visit plumasnews.com for the most recent information.
