Walter Herzfeld

Walter Herzfeld, the son of Henry George Herzfeld and Bertha (£urfiuh) Herzfeld, was born Jan. 20, 1928, at Norcatur, Kansas, and passed away on September 10, 2010, at Clearwater, Kansas, at the age of 82 years, 7 months, and 20 days.

Walter grew up and attended the local public rural schools of Republic County. Following his schooling, he was an independent truck driver for several years.

Walter served with the U.S. Army during W.W. II from April 12, 1946, until his honorable discharge on September 20, 1947, serving overseas in Japan. He received the WW II Victory Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal-Japan.

After returning from the service, he began a self-employed custom combining business along with his brothers Frank and Fred, harvesting from Oklahoma to Minnesota. He then was the owner and operator of AB&W Mobile Repair at Haysville, Kansas, setting double-wide trailers for several years until his retirement.

On August 29, 1953, he was united in marriage to Wilma Long and she survives.

Walter was a member of the V.F.W. of Haysville, where he was active for many years, serving on the board of directors.

Walter was preceded in death by six brothers: George, Fred, John, Ernest, Alvin, and Herman; four sisters: Dorothy, Doris, Martha, and Lillian and a sister-in-law Sylvia Riordon.

He is survived by his wife Wilma Herzfeld of Clearwater, Kansas, one brother, Frank Herzfeld and wife Phyllis of Milford, Nebraska; three sisters: Mollie Longacre of Phoenix, Arizona, Pauline Fry of Concordia, Kansas, and Mary Roop of Chester, Nebraska; nieces and nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Graveside funeral services and interment were held Tuesday, September 14, 2010, at the Ida Cemetery, rural Munden, Kansas.
