With temperatures reaching over 100 degrees this week, the opening of the pool in Kearny could not have come at a better time, a feat that would not have been possible if not for the generous donation made by Asarco. In a move geared towards investing in the local community and assuring the continued use of the pool, Asarco not only donated $15,000 towards the renovations, maintenance, and operating costs of the pool, but they also provided the man power needed to assist with the "implementation and repairs necessary to make the pool operational," sated council member Hank Martin.

Faced with approving a tentative budget at the May town council meeting, council members were forced to make the difficult decision to keep the pool closed for the summer as there were no available funds to support the operating costs of the pool, which were expected to run the town $35,920.

"Asarco really came through for Kearny this year," said Kearny Town Clerk Margaret Gaston. They provided a much needed public service.

And to show the town's appreciation, Asarco was honored for their commitment to the community during a ribbon cutting ceremony on June 7, to commemorate "opening day" for the pool. "Without Asarco, the pool would not be open for this summer," said Kearny Mayor Debra Sommers, thanking them for their support, both financially and physically. She also commended Asarco for their help in accomplishing such a large task in so little time, supporting their employees that live in the area and the children of Kearny.

Being the good neighbor that they are, Asarco is also donating the fireworks for the 4th of July celebration in Kearny this year.

There are a few changes to the pool schedule this year that were made in an effort to help reduce the expected operating costs. The hours of operation will be 1 to 5 p.m., Monday-Saturday for public swim, and 5 to 7 p.m., Monday - Friday for adult swim with the pool being closed on Sunday. There will be no pool rentals this summer as there are fewer lifeguards available. Pool fees will remain $2/person/day and passes will be available for purchase at the rate of $40/individual, $50/family of two, $60/family of three, $70/family of four, $80/family of five, $90/family of six or more people.
