Board meets Thursday, March 11

A second artificial turf field at Cape Henlopen High School is back on die school board's agenda, one meeting after it was rejected. Esthelda Parker Selby, one of the four board members who voted to reject a second field, has asked that the matter come back before the board.

The board meets at 730 pjn., Thursday, March 11, at Mariner Middle School.

Parker Selby, Sara Wilkinson, Noble Prettyman and Andy Lewis all voted against installing a second artificial turf field at the new high school.

Dissenting board members said they had concerns about unfinished work in the building and wanted to make sure the teachers had everything they needed before money was spent on a turf field.

Board member Gary Wray said there's not much time left to consider the option - Monday, March 15, is the last day to approve the bid in order for the field to be ready for fall play. .

Conlon commended Parker Selby for doing her homework as a board member and making sure all her concerns were addressed. She also said time is running out on the artificial turf field, noting that if the artificial field is not approved, construction must begin on a grass field.

Construction teams will be finished by mid-summer, she said, so time is running out on decision-making.

Conlon said turf fields are the better option for the community because they can withstand constant use and don't need the recovery time grass requires.

Lewis, who cast the final vote against the field, said he's asked a lot of questions since the last meeting and has gotten many answers, but he is still investigating. "As of right now, I'm not sure what my opinion is. I'm as torn now as I was then," he said Monday, March 8.

Lewis declined to share specifics because he is still getting answers to his questions.

Parker Selby could not be reached for comment.

Board President Camilla Conlon reminded board and audience members that Robert's Rules of Order allow anyone on the majority side of a vote to bring the item back for another vote at a later meeting.
