THE DELAWARE DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES and Environmental Control held its 21st Annual Beach Grass Planting along Delaware's ocean and bay beaches Saturday, March 20. Over the past 21 years dedicated volunteers have planted 4.8 million stems of beach grass. This year more than 1,1(50 volunteers planted 600,000 stems of beach grass. Dunes are unstable and subject to the ravages of wind and water, and beach grass helps build and" stabilize dunes. Blades of grass help trap wind blown sand, which can create new dunes and expand existing dunes. Many coastal sand dunes were swept to sea during the storms this past winter. Crews rebuilt the dunes in the past weeks and the beach grass will help the dunes to stabilize for the coming vacation season.
