Cape Henlopen School District has made an excellent choice in selecting Dr. Kevin Carson as its next superintendent. By virtue of his many successful years as an educator and administrator, Carson is well known and respected in Sussex and throughout Delaware. The most recent affirmation of his leadership ability is the overwhelming yes vote by Woodbridge School District voters for a tax increase to finance construction of a new high school. That vote is particularly notable in that Woodbridge is located in a conservative part of the county and the vote came at a time in our national history when tax increase proposals scarcely even get mentioned, much less approved. Because of his success with student achievement and visceral belief in the ability of students from all walks of life to be successful, Carson made the parents and residents of Woodbridge strong believers in education. Carson has been mentioned frequently in the pages of the Cape Gazette because of his progressive policies and initiatives involving the physical well-being of his students. The Woodbridge schools were among the first in Delaware to rid their hallways and

cafeterias of the sugar-rich sodas contributing to the nation's obesity epidemic. He is among those pioneering a farm-to-table program to ensure that students are eating - wherever possible - fruits and vegetables grown in Delaware. He understands that fresh foods better prepare students for schoolwork and that buying policies involving local farmers get an A in the economic development grade book. He also understands the strong correlation between highly effective school systems and economic development. People want to live and raise their children in areas with progressive and effective school systems.

Carson is one of the earliest and most fervent supporters of and believers in the value of physical education and getting kids outside. He knows young lives balanced with good food, physical activity, nurturing classroom instruction, discipline and positive reinforcement have a great shot at success. Cape Henlopen has been on an impressively positive roll under the current school board and its interim Superintendent Dr. David Robinson. There's every reason to believe that Dr. Carson will seize that momentum and carry it even further.
